Arguably there is no Aim Games participant who has as close to equal involvement and success between both our tournaments and art contests as Stu Lindsey. Finding his passion for art in his youth, art and artistic talent are key characteristics of both his professional and home life. Stu tells us, “I loved art at school and went on to college where I did a bit of everything from ceramics, life drawing, photography, art history and more. Later I focused on graphic design which I continued to do at university. When I’m not throwing or drawing I’m a prosthetic technician making prosthetic legs for the NHS. Having a background in art and being a bit creative is a bonus when I’m sculpting legs out of foam and other materials, I love my job and love that I get to make things like that for other people. I’m pretty sure I’ve entered every Aim Games Themed Art Contest, so there have been pieces of my work throughout the Aim Games history. My other half Fiona has also won several and our kids enter as well, so it’s a battle at times to find space to draw and work. It gets quite busy during competition time, but it's fun seeing how we all interpret the themes."
As someone who loves working with different materials to create, Stu employs an intriguing variety of media for his entries. He explains, “Currently for the art contests I’m using alcohol markers with some other pens or ink thrown in. I find them quite quick to use when trying to squeeze in an entry or two for each theme in the deadline. In past entries I’ve painted with acrylics and other paints, whatever we’ve had around the house.” Given his background in graphic design and winning entries throughout our art contests, Stu was even contracted to design our current logos and is currently working on ones to be used in the future.
Mr. Lindsey truly has carved a long and exciting history as an Aim Games participant, gaining experience that has contributed to his own evolution as an artist and athlete, as well as a broader insight into our work and growth as an organization. Reflecting on it all, he shares, “Before placing in the art contest for ‘K15: The Shield,’ I hadn’t really done any drawing or painting for about seventeen years. I was using paints for that, and I didn’t start using pens until after I won some in the prize package, so it’s been interesting transitioning from brush to pen, but that's what I like most about the art contests. They have given me a reason to be creative and draw again, I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed it. I’ve made friends all over the world and have won some amazing prizes over the years. I’m lucky there are gaps in between tournaments to enter the art contest. It would be a tough choice otherwise. I’ve entered almost every tournament. It’s been a fantastic journey watching it grow as a series. Playing has made my throwing better throughout, helping me to win a couple gold medals. The Aim Games programs have changed our home for the best, with the whole family competing at times in the art contest and tournaments.”
