To date, Chief Ellen Ramlan is the most active, successful and professionally established artist within the Indonesian Aim Games community, and among the top competitors worldwide in our Themed Art Contests. A professional design artist since 1994, Chief Ramlan earned his bachelor’s degree in graphic design from the School of Fine Arts and Design at the Bandung Institute of Technology. From there he earned his Master’s degree in art and culture studies at the National Institute of Art and Culture in Bandung. In addition to being a professional design artist, Ramlan lectures for the Visual Communication Design study program in the School of Architecture and Design at the National Institute of Technology.
When it comes to his artistry and his favorite mediums, Ramlan explains “In making illustrations, I like watercolor, poster paint, drawing pen, ink, colored pencil, and for design I usually use Corel Draw. I created the logo for the D’lempar Pisau throwing organization, and I am also a designer and leader among Indonesian throwing knife makers. Some of my knife works are already in Rick Lemberg’s collection, as well as in the collections of several other American throwers. I also focus on making leather crafts.”
Chief Ramlan’s history and experience as a sports throwing athlete and organizer is just as extensive. One of the original founders of knife and tomahawk throwing in Indonesia, he helped found D’lempar Pisau Indonesia, the first official Indonesian sports throwing organization, which focuses on developing and socializing the activity of knife throwing as a sport, as opposed to a martial art. When it comes to our tournaments, Ramlan tells us, “I think Rick has brought this sport activity to a different level with the Aim Games. This is very good for the development of knife throwing sports in the world, because it is able to embrace throwers in each country.”
Chief Ramlan’s artwork has not only populated our contests, but he even designed our original logo. Reflecting on his experience as an Aim Games art contestant, he shares with us, “I love the challenges presented by the themes, as well as the friendly competition from the other participants. At first, I was drawn to the prizes, but I want to contribute to the Aim Games art collection, as I see the quality of submitted artwork increase.”
