Hailing From: South Australia, Australia
Throwing Since: 2004
Those who are familiar with the Sports Throwing community know there is little opportunity for competition in Australia, but this didn’t stop Alan Wickham from engaging in the community and competitions extensively on an international level. Building his skill and experience on his own for 15 years, he researched and discovered the competitive Sports Throwing organization UKAT in 2019 under the encouragement of historic Aim Games Superstar Mauro Magnanini. Since then, Alan has competed heavily online and traveled the world to compete live in Italy, France and England for the UKAT World Cup Championships, as well as in Sweden for two Arboga Sportkastningsklubb Soulthrower Open Tournaments.
With strong ability in, and appreciation for, many throwing categories and live events, Alan tells us his favorites are throwing no spin and playing Coutanque with friends. He mentions German expert thrower Tom Tom and our own Swedish Aim Games Megastar Marcus Pehart, among others, who have greatly influenced his enthusiasm for the sport. Two years into competitive throwing, Alan discovered and joined the Aim Games during ‘K17 The Wall’, playing in every tournament since. When asked about his experiences with the games, he tells us, “The Aim Games has given me the opportunity to compete regularly and internationally. By 2021 I had been throwing in the UKAT online competitions, which I had only just discovered, and saw some comments about the Aim Games and then went on a search ,and there before me was another throwing world. Here in Australia, there is such limited opportunity to compete, so the tournaments have been fantastic, and have shown me I am competitive on an international level. It’s been good for my confidence and really has improved my throwing”.
Advice To New Throwers:
“Keep at it and start close, especially if you’re into no-spin. Take baby steps and work your way up to farther distances. It's not the knife that makes the thrower, it's the thrower that makes the knife work for them, and there are many ways to throw a knife and axe”.
Notable Achievements:
Outside the Aim Games, Alan took the silver cup for long distance rotational knife at the 2024 UKAT World Cup Championship in England, won 1st place for overall points earned at the 2024 Soulthrower Open in Arboga, Sweden, and most importantly to Alan, has made countless amazing friends within the international Sports Throwing community.
Inside the Aim Games, Alan holds a three Superstar Rank and has placed in the top 40 three times, earning 36th place in ‘K17 The Wall’, 29th place in ‘H7 The Tunnel’ and 26th place in ‘K18 Pirate Island’.
